Attendees will receive an overview of the key federal statutes that protect the rights of students with disabilities in the K-12 public education system. These statutes are as follows: Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Attendees will also learn about school districts’ responsibility to identify and evaluate students who may be in need of special education. The presentation will also address procedural protections for students that may apply in certain discipline matters. By attending this presentation, parents and attorneys will gain a better understanding of how they can effectively advocate for children with disabilities.
This session is open to non-legal professionals including parents, teachers and counselors.
